Hawai‘i P-20, in partnership with the University of Hawai‘i, and several Philanthropic partners (Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, Hawai‘i Community Foundation, Strada Education Network, the Stupski Foundation and the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation) launched a comprehensive new summer onramp initiative called Next Steps to Your Future,” designed specifically to support Hawai‘i‘s Class of 2020 public high school seniors. The “Next Steps to Your Future” initiative consisted of two parts: summer advising and free summer classes at the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges.

Next Steps To Your Future

Summer Advising Initiative

The summer advising initiative, led by Hawai‘i P-20 and Nudge Solutions, engaged and guided over 1,700 seniors in transitioning to their post-high school plans for careers and connecting them to postsecondary education, training and/or employment. Every student was connected with an experienced University of Hawai‘i advisor who provided free personalized support and information to guide them in their next steps whether they plan to enroll in college or if they have had to delay their college plans. Support consisted of specialized text messages with reminders on completing college applications and the FAFSA and providing access to relevant resources and opportunities to receive one-on-one support from a dedicated advisor over the eight weeks of summer. This initiative was developed building upon the Hawai‘i P-20 pilot project called the Hawai‘i Nudge Campaign that was previously implemented in a few high schools during SY 2019-20.

UHCC Exploration Classes

Students also have the opportunity to participate in free online University of Hawai‘i Community College Summer Exploration classes. Over 1,490 graduates participated in 121 classes offered by seven University of Hawai‘i Community college campuses. The goal of these classes was to support students’ transition with their next steps to explore career options and discover the education and training needed to reach their goals. As a result, 75% of participants registered for Fall classes at a University of Hawai‘i campus as of August 2020.

Stronger Together Hawaii Scholarship

In addition, to financially support students in their postsecondary journey, a $2 million Stronger Together Hawaii Scholarship was created, funded by Hawaii Community Foundation and First Hawaiian Bank Foundation specifically for Next Steps students. 370 students were awarded Next Step Scholarships and the average award was $6200.

“We know that our graduating seniors have persevered in the face of adversity and that many of their plans were disrupted. Our Next Steps initiative was to make sure students had options after they graduated and received the necessary advising to help make their college dreams a reality and transition them to their futures.”
